In October 2013, NGC won orders for over 4800 sets of gearboxes from South African suburban rail transit to be delivered over the next 10 years. This marks the larget rail transit sales order ever obtained by NGC.

The order calls for PDM460-type double-stage transmission structural gearboxes, which passed their intial inspection last month. The items for the inspection include various test data on gearboxes and the appearance of the gearboxes, components and relevant technical documents. 16 have already been delivered.

The PDM460-type gearboxes are to be adopted for the new suburban rail trainsit network in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. This new train aims to accommodate for the ever-growing number of passengers in these areas and provide highly efficient, reliable public transport.

From the model analysis of vehicles operating under various operating conditions, the PDM460-type suburban train gearbox, developed and manufactured by NGC, ensures high reliability under complicated operating conditions at variable loads and high vibrations; additionally, by adopting unique gear modification technology, the bearing capacity of the gearboxes has been enhanced. The non-maintenance service life of this type of gearbox is greater than 1.2 million kilometers, meeting the demands of low noise and high density power.

The Company’s rail transit gearboxes are applied in many different fields, including urban rail transit, inter-city rail transit, high-speed rails and locomotives. Its clients include GE, ALSTOM, CSR Corporation Limited, China CNR Corporation Limited and other famous Chinese and international manufacturers. The company has delivered nearly ten thousand locomotive traction gearboxes and more than ten thousand metro gearboxes to the global market, of which, the Company’s metro gearboxes are already in use in urban subway lines in China, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, India, Holland, Singapore, and other countries. By winning this large order for South African suburban rail transit is yet another major breakthrough for NGC in the rail transit business.
